α-pyrrolidone616-45-5

α-pyrrolidone616-45-5

Poly vinyl pyrrolidone is obtained from the monomer vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) through bulk polymerization, solution polymerization and other methods. During the preparation process of bulk polymerization, the viscosity of the reaction system is high, the polymer is not easy to diffuse, and the heat of the polymerization reaction is not easily removed, leading to local overheating.

α-pyrrolidone (γ-butyrolactam, CAS 616-45-5) is a high-purity heterocyclic amide solvent. Industrial-grade variants exceed 99.0% purity (GC-tested) with a 245–250°C boiling point, functioning as a critical reaction medium and monomer in advanced industries.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) derives from vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) via processes like bulk or solution polymerization. Bulk polymerization is limited by high system viscosity, hindering polymer diffusion and heat dissipation-causing local overheating, low molecular weight, excess residual monomers, and yellowing, thus lacking practical use. Industrial production therefore relies on solution polymerization, with two primary routes.

First: NVP undergoes solution polymerization in organic solvents, followed by steam stripping. Second: aqueous copolymerization with water-soluble cationic, anionic, or non-ionic monomers. PVP homopolymers form through methods including heating NVP above 140°C, initiating in solutions (water, ethanol, benzene, etc.), or light irradiation.

Polymer structure and performance vary by method. Free radical solution polymerization yields more uniform, stable products, becoming the main NVP homopolymerization process. Adjusting monomer concentration, temperature, and initiator levels produces PVP homopolymers with differing molecular weights and water solubility.
