Povidone iodine is a loose complex formed by combining elemental iodine and a polymer carrier. Povidone acts as a carrier and a solubilizer. It is a yellow-brown to brown-red amorphous powder at room temperature. It has a slight odor and is easily soluble in water or ethanol. The aqueous solution is acidic and insoluble in ether, chloroform, acetone, ethane, and carbon tetrachloride. Povidone iodine aqueous solution does not have the disadvantages of iodine tincture. It is light in color, easy to elute, has little irritation to the mucous membrane, does not require ethanol deiodination, has no corrosive effect, and has low toxicity.

Povidone-iodine is an iodine disinfectant that can directly denature and precipitate proteins in bacteria, causing the death of pathogenic microorganisms, thereby achieving efficient disinfection and sterilization, and can kill viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi, protozoa, etc., and has low toxicity. Povidone-iodine aqueous solution has strong pharmacological activity against Staphylococcus aureus, gonococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Treponema pallidum, hepatitis B virus, HIV, Trichomonas vaginalis, etc. Povidone-iodine gel is a semi-fluid colloid for gynecological external use made of povidone-iodine and a hydrophilic matrix, which is a system that maintains its sustained release. Due to the continuous release of free iodine, the skin and mucous membranes maintain a certain iodine concentration, inhibiting and killing bacteria. It is mainly used for gynecological vaginal infections, miscible with vaginal secretions, killing pathogenic microorganisms in secretions, blocking the spread and invasion of sexually transmitted diseases, and treating other bacterial infections of the vagina. 

The main indications of povidone-iodine are as follows:

1. Used for purulent dermatitis, fungal skin infection, small-area mild burns and scalds, and also for disinfection of small-area skin and mucosal wounds.

2. Prevention and local treatment of bacterial and fungal vaginitis, cervical erosion, trichomoniasis, genital itching, genital infection with odor, yellow and smelly vaginal discharge, comprehensive vulvar inflammation, senile vaginitis, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and condyloma acuminatum.

3. Disinfection of balanitis, posthitis, external genitalia, and surrounding areas. Prevention and local treatment of gonorrhea, syphilis, and condyloma acuminatum.

4. Disinfection of tableware and eating utensils.

5. Disinfection of skin at surgical sites.
