2-Pyrrolidone, CAS No. 616-45-5, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid or crystal, and is the simplest γ-lactam. It is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and most common organic solvents.

Chemical properties

2-Pyrrolidone forms metal salts with alkali metals, metal hydroxides or alkaline hydroxides. It can be hydrolyzed in the presence of strong acids to produce 4-aminobutyric acid. It reacts with acetic anhydride to produce N-acetyl pyrrolidone. It reacts with paraformaldehyde under base catalysis to obtain N-hydroxymethyl-2-pyrrolidone.

In terms of solubility, 2-pyrrolidone can be mixed with water, alcohol, and ether. It is miscible with most light-sensitive solvents such as benzene, ethyl acetate and carbon disulfide, and is difficult to dissolve in petroleum ether.

2-Pyrrolidone is used as a solvent for synthetic resins, plasticizers, polymerizers, inks, insecticides, pesticides, polyols and iodine, and is also an organic synthesis intermediate. It is used to make nylon 4 and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, nylon 4 and raw materials for naofukang.

Preparation method

It is usually obtained by amination of γ-butyrolactone. Another method is to use maleic anhydride as a raw material, hydrogenate and amination, and the yield can reach 90%-92%.
