Povidone is prepared by the Peppe reaction. Acetylene and formaldehyde react in the presence of a highly active catalyst, copper acetylide, to form butyne diol. Butyne diol is hydrogenated to give butanediol and then cyclized to give butyrolactone.

Butyrolactone reacts with ammonia to form pyrrolidone. Pyrrolidone and ethylene are vinylized under pressure to form a monomer (i.e., vinyl pyrrolidone), which is then polymerized under the action of a catalyst to give povidone.

Management status

Allowed as a food additive in Europe. Included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Guide (for intramuscular and intravenous injections, ophthalmic preparations, oral capsules, drops, pellets, suspensions and tablets, sublingual tablets, topical or vaginal preparations). Licensed in the UK for non-injectable preparations.
