Copovidone (PVP VA64) is a vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer that appears as a white or slightly yellow powder with a weak odor and minimal taste. It is soluble in water, alcohol and various organic solvents, making it widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and surfactant industries. In the pharmaceutical field, it is used as a dry binder for tablets, a matrix former for amorphous solid dispersions, a retardant and a film-forming agent. It plays the role of thickener, dispersant, lubricant, film-forming agent, adhesive, etc. in cosmetics. Compared with povidone, copovidone exhibits excellent plasticity as a tablet binder, is less hygroscopic and more elastic, making it ideal for film-forming applications.

VA 64 has a nominal K value of 28 with a range of 25.2-30.8 and is typically used in tablets and granules in proportions of 2% to 8% of final weight. This enhances the tablet's mechanical properties and reduces brittleness and susceptibility to capping during compression. The dry binding activity of copovidone was studied with other binders and showed excellent efficacy, especially in direct compression tableting. It significantly improves tablet properties such as hardness and friability. Additionally, copovidone functions in controlled drug delivery systems, acting as a barrier to water penetration in the matrix core and enhancing tablet stability under tropical conditions. It has been used in sustained-release matrix tablets, showing improved mechanical properties and reduced water absorption.
