Povidone iodine, also known as betadine, is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent used for the prevention and treatment of local wound infections. It is used for minor cuts, abrasions, burns, blisters, and can be used for first aid. Povidone iodine has a wide range of antibacterial activity and has a killing effect on bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses.

In the solution, the iodine element in povidone-iodine is slowly released, and it has been proven that bacteria do not develop resistance to povidone-iodine, and the human sensitization rate is only 0.7%. However, it is not recommended to use betadine as a disinfectant when doing blood bacterial culture, which will increase the risk of false positives. According to current guidelines, alcohol disinfectants, 10% iodine tincture or 10.5% alcohol chlorhexidine can all reduce the risk of contamination and false positives.
