Povidone iodine is a loose complex formed by combining elemental iodine and a polymer carrier. Povidone acts as a carrier and a solubilizer. It is a yellow-brown to brown-red amorphous powder at room temperature. It has a slight odor and is easily soluble in water or ethanol. The aqueous solution is acidic and insoluble in ether, chloroform, acetone, ethane and carbon tetrachloride. Povidone iodine aqueous solution does not have the disadvantages of iodine tincture. It is light in color, easy to elute, has little irritation to the mucous membrane, does not require ethanol deiodination, has no corrosive effect, and has low toxicity.

Preparation of PVP-I: Take an appropriate amount of PVP in a mortar, add anhydrous ethanol to moisten it and grind it evenly, transfer it to an iodine bottle, take the iodine that has been ground into powder in advance and put it into the iodine bottle,

Add enough anhydrous ethanol, adjust the pH to 6~7, ultrasonicate for 15 minutes, wait for the iodine to be completely dissolved, transfer the solution to a beaker, and evaporate it to dryness.

Properties: PVP-I is a complex of PVP and iodine, which has a strong killing effect on bacteria, viruses, fungi, molds and spores. Stable, non-irritating, and completely water-soluble.

Application: Skin disinfection and instrument disinfection for hospital surgery, injection, etc., prevention of infection in oral, gynecological, surgical, dermatological, etc., sterilization and disinfection of household utensils and utensils, food industry, sterilization and disinfection of aquaculture, and prevention and control of animal diseases, etc. It is the preferred iodine-containing medical disinfectant and sanitary disinfectant in developed countries. It has been included in the 90th edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
