Properties

1. General properties and solubility

PVPP is supplied as white or off-white powder with a slight special odor, basically tasteless, insoluble in water and various organic solvents.

2. Hygroscopicity

PVPP's water absorption rate increases with increasing relative humidity.

3. Small amount of gel formation

The formation of gel inhibits the penetration of water into the tablet, slowing down the disintegration of the tablet. Unlike some other disintegrants, PVPP is insoluble and has no tendency to form gel at all.

4. Complexation and solubility-aiding effect

PVPP can form complexes with a variety of medicines and other substances. The formation process is reversible and will not form in alkaline media. It is easier to form complexes with aromatic compounds containing phenyl and/or carboxyl groups.
