Background and Overview

 

2-Pyrrolidone is miscible with water, alcohol, ether, chloroform, benzene, ethyl acetate and carbon disulfide; it is insoluble in petroleum ether. Its main use is as a raw material for the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). It is also a high-grade solvent used in the production of pharmaceuticals, resins, acetylene recovery, and floor wax special inks. NVP can be prepared by the reaction of 2-pyrrolidone and acetylene, and then polymerized to obtain PVP. PVP has excellent solubility, low toxicity, film-forming property, complexing property, surface activity and chemical stability. It is widely used in the fields of medicine, food, daily chemicals, coatings, polymer polymerization, etc. It also has many uses in textiles, printing and dyeing, papermaking, photosensitive materials, agriculture and animal husbandry, etc. There are three main industrial production routes for 2-pyrrolidone: 1) Rapov process: the raw materials acetylene and formaldehyde react to form 1,4-butynediol, hydrogenate to 14-butanediol, convert to γ-butyrolactone, and then react with ammonia to produce 2-pyrrolidone. 2) Recently, due to the successful development of a new process for the oxidation of butane to produce cis-butane or 1,4-butanediol, the source of γ-butyrolactone is abundant, so it has become the main route for the production of pyrrolidone series products. 1,4-butanedinitrile should be obtained, which is partially hydrogenated to aminobutyronitrile, and then hydrolyzed and cyclized to 2-pyrrolidone. This route was successfully developed and industrialized by DSM in the Netherlands in the late 1970s.

Applications

2-Pyrrolidone can be used as a high boiling point solvent for petroleum processing; to prepare N-vinylpyrrolidone, acrylonitrile, and aminobutyric acid; it can also be used as a plasticizer for coatings; under the action of benzoyl chloride and alkali metals, it can be polymerized to produce nylon-4, etc. 2-Pyrrolidone is a class of pyrrolidine compounds with a five-membered lactam ring, which is widely present in natural products and various synthetic compounds. Pyrrolidone compounds are widely used in the medical field because of their various biological activities. Therefore, by modifying and functionalizing the pyrrolidone structure, many compounds with various biological activities can be prepared.
