Structure: The backbone of PVP consists of carbon-carbon single bonds (C–C), with the nitrogen atom and carbonyl group (C=O) of the pyrrolidone ring attached to each repeating unit. The repeating unit of PVP is the vinylpyrrolidone monomer, where the nitrogen is part of the cyclic lactam structure and is attached to the carbon chain.

In its polymerized form, the structure of PVP looks like this:

–[CH2CH(CO)-N-]n–

Where the N is the nitrogen atom from the original pyrrolidone ring and the CO is the carbonyl group from the lactam ring.

PVP can be synthesized as a homopolymer or as a copolymer with other monomers. The degree of polymerization, or the number of repeating units, can be controlled during the polymerization process, which affects the molecular weight of the final product.
