Preparation

In industry, 2-pyrrolidone is often prepared by ammoniation of γ-butyrolactone. The reaction occurs in a piston flow tubular reactor at 250-290°C, 0.4-1.4 MPa, and the catalyst is solid phase magnesium silicate.

The catalyst in the tubular furnace reactor is set as a fixed bed, and the entire reaction is carried out in the gas phase with a yield of 75-85%. The 2-pyrrolidone obtained by this method can reach a purity of 99.5% after distillation purification.

Other preparation methods include catalytic hydrogenation or electrolytic reduction of succinimide, (gas phase oxidation) carbonylation of allylamine, hydrogenation reduction of succinonitrile, followed by hydrolysis and cyclization, hydrogenation in the presence of Pd-Ru catalyst, and subsequent ammonia ammonia preparation.

In 2010, the global demand for 2-pyrrolidone was estimated at 32,000 tons, with BASF and ISP (International Specialty Chemicals, now Ashland) being the major producers.
