Synthesis and production process
After years of development, the industrial production technology of 2-pyrrolidone has become mature and efficient. There are mainly the following synthesis methods:
Succinic anhydride method
Process flow: Succinic anhydride reacts with ammonia to generate butyrolactam, and 2-pyrrolidone is obtained by catalytic hydrolysis and cyclization.
Features: The raw material source is wide and the process is relatively simple, but there are certain challenges in by-product control and wastewater treatment.
Acetonitrile-ethylene ketone method
Process flow: Acetonitrile and ethylene ketone react with the catalyst to generate an open ring structure and then cyclize to form 2-pyrrolidone.
Features: Mild reaction conditions and high selectivity, but the production and storage requirements of ethylene ketone are high.
Biological fermentation method
Process flow: Use microbial metabolism to convert biomass such as succinic acid into 2-pyrrolidone.
Features: Green and environmentally friendly, few by-products, and gradually realizing industrialization, but the current cost is relatively high.

1. Solvent
2-pyrrolidone is widely used as an industrial solvent due to its excellent solubility and stability:
Inkjet printing ink: As a core solvent, 2-pyrrolidone can significantly improve the fluidity, adhesion and stability of ink, while also having low volatility, reducing the impact on the environment during the printing process.
Coatings and adhesives: used to dissolve polymer materials such as polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride to improve the film-forming property and adhesion of coatings.
Electronic cleaning agent: In the cleaning of semiconductors and precision electronic components, 2-pyrrolidone can effectively remove surface dirt without damaging the substrate.

Some drugs are derivatives of 2-pyrrolidone, such as cotinine, doxapram, polyvinylpyrrolidone, ethosuximide and piracetam.
2-Pyrrolidone is an intermediate in the production of vinylpyrrolidone, a precursor of polyvinylpyrrolidone, and the solvent NMP.
